Hello everyone! My name is Christina Rick, and I am a Memphis-based artist/illustrator and aspiring writer with a passion for free thinking, creative expression, sci-fi & fantasy, political satire, individualism, and all things Ireland. My unique style can be described as bright, liberal, and unconstrained. Through both traditional and digital mediums, I create original works of illustrations, designs, and paintings using bold textures and vivid color schemes; my techniques often feature overlapping styles in abstract, expressionism, surrealism, comics, and pop art. Most often, I draw people and faces, usually beginning with a fairly minimal outline or deep shaded silhouette and then go from there, layering and blending from an array of tools and explosion of colors.
My inspiration is driven undoubtedly, and most notably, from that of the late Freddie Mercury. An all-around artist, he continues to be the biggest influence in my art & one of my favorite figures to sketch and explore new styles when creating. Many people don't know this, but Freddie himself studied graphic illustration/design from 1966-69 in the years just leading up to forming his band, Queen. During his time as a student, Freddie had become an avid fan of rising star, Jimi Hendrix, and would spend much of his time drawing and sketching "his hero," whom he never stopped celebrating, even after Hendrix's death in 1970. Freddie later recalled, "He was living out everything I wanted to be. Hendrix is very important. He’s my idol. He sort of epitomises, with his presentation on stage, the whole works of a rock star. There’s no way you can compare him to anyone and there’s nobody who can take his place.” The way he described Hendrix is the way I would describe him—Irreplaceable; Incomparable; My Idol. It's true, no one could ever take Freddie's place in this world. And I will never stop celebrating his life and his work, especially through my own.
