Art has always been an important part of my life - when I embarked upon painting as my chosen career, I studied under Raymond Brose of San Jose State College. I then studied privately under nationally acclaimed painter Thomas Leighton of San Francisco, CA.
Although I've done many landscapes, my favorite subjects are people and animals. I specialize in portraits – drawing out the essence of my subject is always most satisfying when it’s another person at the other end of my brush. However, as with most artists, I find inspiration as it comes: a poem or song can also be the thing that unleashes my muse, helping me to envision and execute an engrossing fantasy on canvas. With my portraits I try to capture not only the person’s likeness, but a deeply felt sense of their character. My paintings of large animals were inspired by photographs that a close friend took while in Africa, all of which resonated with me in a way that shook the very core of my being. I always strive to move the viewer with overpowering hope and emotion in much of the same way.
I have received many awards and have sold paintings in the U.S. and abroad. In addition to my painting I am also an accomplished art teacher.
