The Art of Ryan Forsythe

The Art of Ryan Forsythe

Ryan Forsythe is a writer, editor, book designer, teacher, publisher, traveler, and dad originally from Cleveland, though he now considers the mythical State of Jefferson home. His primary digital art has been slugdalas - Banana Slug Mandalas, of course!

Slugdalas begin their lives as digital photographs of the banana slugs he found in and around Redwood National & State Parks (when he and his wife ran a hostel there). He then highlights a pie-shaped section of the photograph, which is joined to the slice’s mirror image, to form one “spoke” of the final image. He continues to add spokes, rotating each slightly to form 360 degrees.

Slugdala #1 won the 2009 Staff Art Award for Toyon literary magazine. Slugdala #11 received a First Place award in digital photography at the Del Norte County Fair. In addition to Toyon, they have also appeared in Mandala Journal (Slugdala #8) and the Porter Gulch Review (Slugdala #9).

Slugdalas can now also be found on t-shirts. Check out the Slugdala store at Threadless (, where you can pick your banana slug mandala, then your style (short sleeve, long sleeve, hoodie, tank, etc.), color, and size.
