The first reason I make art is because it makes me smile and feel good. The second reason I make art is to make others smile and feel good!
Curiosity and the desire to know more, has led me to explore a variety of art forms and mediums over the years, including drawing, calligraphy, assemblage, collage, jewelry, photography, pen and ink, acrylics and watercolor. I also have done many hand and nature crafts. Every once in awhile I just have to make something with my hands, whether it has to do with wood, beads, feathers, shells, fabric, or whatever! "Crafting was the creative path to becoming an artist for me and I loved every step of the way.
Since, I am always following where the creative spirit leads, I now find myself in a world of little, exaggerated birds and other fantasy creatures with eyes popping wide and amusing expressions. I am also painting an abstract portrait series called "Women of Whimsy." Each of these vivid portraits is decorated with bright colors, shapes, symbols and patterns and some have small cats or birds. The women are abstracted and fantastical with dreamy, pensive or amused smiles. The portraits remind me of "masks."
Lots of vivid color appear in both those series as well as another called, "Land of Paws," where there are abstracted cats wearing cool colors and patterns and looking like they have something to say. So, I will probably be painting some abstracted dogs to keep the cats company.
My "Feathers, Fins & Fur" series is black and white, pen and inks. These are drawings that begin with the most recognized anatomical features of a bird or mammal sketched and from there, some free doodling and repetative line art is added. This images allow me to join focused detail with the art of creative doodling.
I’ve been asked how to describe my artwork, and I always find that question difficult to answer. To provide an all-inclusive definition is not easy because I’ve been influenced by many different styles. But, if I have to pick a style, I would describe myself as an expressionistic painter with tendencies towards abstract and whimsy!
Thank you for taking the time to look at my work. I hope you find something that makes you smile.
