Who is Derek Redfern, the person behind Redshutter?
Born and bred a Geordie and a teacher by profession, my interest in photography was sparked as a teenager through my father who was a forensic photographer. This interest lay dormant throughout my 20's probably due to a number of factors such as family and cost, but the dawning of the new millennium re-ignited my interest when I borrowed my fathers Nikon for a family holiday. This interest then blossomed with the purchase of my digital camera in 2005 as cost was no longer a limiting factor - I could experiment as much as I liked.
I sold a number of my images through my own art gallery until my teaching career took me away from the small town of Whitby in the UK, and onto the international scene via China, Greece and Gran Canaria. In the summer of 2016 I returned to Whitby where I now run a picture framing business in the town.
Although I enjoy taking scenic shots, especially of sunsets or sunrises, I've become even more interested in macro work, be it nature related or architectural. Whatever the subject is though, I try to catch what is in front of me, sometimes taking a very journalistic approach to capturing life in the towns and cities that I've lived in and visited - where ever we travel, you can usually find my wife and getting off the tourist routes and exploring the life of the ordinary people.
I currently live in the countryside which has led me to a return to panoramic images, as well as my burgeoning interest in macro work, but I've also lived in large cities where everyday life and architecture drove my interest, showing my flexibility in what interests me and drives my passion for photography.
