Although born in England, I have lived in Africa since 1968, 35 years of which I spent in Botswana . Since retirement I now live in the Eastern Cape, South Africa, my wife's original home.
Through my work with the government architects' department in Botswana I visited most areas of the country over the years, particularly concerning projects for museums, wildlife and tourism.
I became fascinated with traditional village communities and the vernacular building which was an integral part of the way of life, but which was increasingly threatened by urbanisation and the lure of a "modern" lifestyle.
The discovery and exploitation of the diamond fields has now accelerated this process.
Where possible I incorporated traditional building forms in my design work, and have been recording
a vanishing traditional way of life with my watercolours since the 1980s.
