ARTIST PROFILE

I have a portrait of me at 5 years old done by my father. I guess that was my initial inspiration. I started painting around 20, which was 50 years ago! I am self taught although in the last 15 years I have occasionally attended art workshops in California and elsewhere, just to learn more from other artists. I held my first one man exhibition in the early 70's. I have been many things in this life, I worked in advertising, I ran a communications company, I was a psychotherapist. I retired about 15 years ago and decided my last career would be as an artist. Fortunately I have a pretty successful life, so have never been starving! and I generally charge for my work according to the time, effort and quality of outcome that I believe it deserves. I have made a good deal of progress and improvement in my work over 50 years !! In recent years I have been painting with enormous attention and care and each painting I have produced such as New York by Night and the Tower Bridge at Sunset has required over 3 months continuous full time work. Thus my output is small, but the quality and intensity of the work is great, and the cost reflects the time, difficulty and detail required to produce the successful result. Every painting I sell has spent a good deal of time on my own walls and as each departs a bit of me goes with it! I have also been a purchaser of other's art for decades and thus I think I have an ability to judge quality of the work produced, including my own. I have often put my money where my mouth was and have never regretted any purchase. My greatest bargain was an original Montague Dawson water colour sea scape I bought in a junk shop for £5 in the mid 60's. Thus I think I have a good eye. I paint mostly in acrylics on canvas. I like all kinds of painting, landscapes, seascapes, portraits, abstracts, representational, impressionist, but I particularly like painting big cities. I have done various paintings of London, New York, Montreal, St. Petersburg, Venice, Jerusalem, Brighton where I grew up and Mudeford where I have lived for the last 23 years. I recently painted the Queen from a photograph taken at her Jubilee. I am told it is a good likeness and presently she smiles at us from our wall! I founded our local art festival with a friend in 1997 and it is still going strong 22 years later, so I am a great supporter of community art. I have also painted murals and led a team of schools that were commissioned to put a series of murals on our local railway station, including one of mine. My son is also an artist and unlike me has a first class degree in Public Art. I hope I taught him a little, though he taught me much more! (I am also for what it is worth an author and poet). My latest works are paintings of London by night.
