Floating variations - all saints

My approach in this series of small loose canvas paintings is to make it as raw and spontaneous as possible in a "cleansing" kind of way. We are voluntarily or involuntarily "image consumers" in an ocean of data. That makes it more difficult for inner clarity. Spontaneity and intuition is the blood of truth.The most significant moment is before it happens it shapes decisively the outcome. The painting "all saints" is painted in a rugged surface canvas animated with references to urban habitat and wild nature. Texture and surface are interlinked as object as well as memory .

Romulo Gonçalves was born in Madeira Island, Portugal and currently lives and works in London, United Kingdom. Romulo pursued studies in fine art painting, multimedia and design. He received is M.F.A. in 2004. His work is subconsciously focused on bringing attention to the issue of the precarious relationship between Man and Nature (and the interaction of Nature, Society and Technology). He gets inspiration from the immediate everyday experience, in particular from the images and ideas that come from the global interface provided by the mass media and also from the physical contact with the elements (the textural experience). He uses acrylics, oil, charcoal, collage and other materials in his paintings to create a vibrant surface. He defines his work as a balance between action and contention, sourcing its energy from the power of improvisation, serendipity and conscious reasoning in classical terms. He uses thick, textured and watery paint with sometimes a restricted colour range.
