Having taught high school art with a Masters degree for 38 years, Rick has an extensive background in art history, materials, concepts, and processes. While working on his college degrees in art education and studio art, he focused on drawing, printmaking, and jewelry making. While teaching high school art education, he concentrated on landscape watercolor painting. After retiring, he turned his attention to acrylic painting.

Rick thinks of his artwork as a theatrical production in which the viewer is allowed to temporarily suspend disbelief. For the viewer, his artwork becomes a momentary distraction—a gift of enchantment, amusement and emotional connection.

Quoting Rick, “I totally enjoy the magic that takes place during the painting process. As I immerse myself into each creative adventure, I often times find myself feeling transported into another dimension as if time no longer exists and my imagination and hands go about materializing a new image with color, line, texture, a sense of movement, balance, expression, and mood.”

Besides earning several awards for intaglio prints, drawings, and watercolor paintings during the beginning of his art career, Rick has been honored with several one-person exhibitions in galleries and public venues as well as numerous awards in juried exhibitions for his acrylic paintings in the past several years. In 2016 two of his acrylic paintings were awarded Honorable Mention and Best of Show in the Robbin Gallery Exhibition, ‘March Madness.’ In that same year two paintings were juried into the Juried Art Competition & Show with one painting taking an Honorable Mention and the other a Second Place in two different theme categories. Three of his paintings were juried into the February 2017, 2018, and 2019 International Art Juried Competition and Show, ‘Arts in Harmony.’ The 2017 painting received a Robbin Gallery award and the 2019 painting received an Acrylic 4th Place Award. In March 2017 and 2018 two acrylic paintings received an Award of Merit in the Juried Robbin Gallery Membership Exhibition. In October 2017 an acrylic painting received 2nd Place in the St. Cloud State University Juried Alumni Art Exhibition and during that same month the same painting took 2nd Place in Show Case Artists, Heaven Art Gallery in Scottsdale, Arizona in in their electronic showcase, ‘Places.’ In April 2018, two of his acrylic paintings received Award of Excellence in the MN Artists Association Spring Juried Exhibition and the Plymouth, MN 22nd Annual Primavera Show. Also in April another acrylic painting was accepted into the juried Lincoln Gallery 2018 National Fine Art Show in Loveland, CO.
