Description
A Confederate field piece trained on the Union position on Henry Hill on the American Civil War Bull Run Battlefield at Manassas, Virginia
On the morning of July 21, 1861, as the northern and southern armies came together, Confederate General Bernard Bee's men were being overrun by Federal troops. He looked around and saw General Thomas J. Jackson and his men motionless behind him and said "There stands Jackson Like a stone wall". Moments later, Bee was mortally wounded; he died the next day
There is debate as to whether his statement about Jackson was meant as a compliment to Jackson's courage, ir as an insult because Jackson wasn't coming to his aid.
In either case, the appellation stuck, and the name :Stonewall" Jackson is still known today.
