Perhaps the most outrageous aircraft design to come out of Nazi Germany, the Focke-Wulf "Triebflugel" VTOL interceptor was unlike anything else ever seen before or since. Doctor Erich Von Holst, a professor of zoology at the Gottingen Technical University, believed that the principles of dragonfly flight could be applied to a vertical takeoff and landing flying machine. It was Von Holst that came up with the name "Triebflugel" or "thrust wing", based on his years of research into bird and insect flight. Contrary to popular belief, the wings were designed to rotate during horizontal flight too. It would have landed on its cruciform tail, which featured one main wheel at the senter with four steadying smaller wheels that telescoped from the tips of the tail and rudders.
