Mandy McDiad, Visual Artist, Halifax NS
My passion for art began when I was three years old. My parents were renovating the dining room and I remember asking my mom if I could help paint the wall too.She gave me the brush, allowed me to paint the wall, at that very moment I had an epiphany, that one day I was going to be an artist
That day forward I began painting, drawing, exploring my creativity. The age of eight, my parents put me in art school. (Cambridge Public Library, Camb On). during my years studying art, I explored painting, drawing and book making. I continued my art studies through high school, which lead me to continue my exploration and knowledge through out and College and University.
I received a Bachelor in Fine Art, NSCAD University, Halifax NS and a Diploma in Fine Art, Fanshawe College, London Ont. through out my college years, I explored all the different mediums of fine art including painting, drawing, video, photography, sculpture. I volunteered at a local art gallery, and participated in group art and fashion shows.
During my University years, I focused on fashion construction, fashion design, exploring weaving, dying and printing fabric methods and creating textile pieces. I participated in the "Wearable Art show" three years in a row, curated my own solo show at a local restaurant. Today, the restaurant holds a permanent collection of my work. i participated in group fashion and art shows. During the summer students months, I worked as an interior/ exterior painter. During the school months, I worked for a local boutique store selling men and women apparel. I was in charge of window and mannequin displays, merchandising, and keeping the store well organized.
after school, I got a job as an industrial sewing machine operator, specializing on off shore, industrial work wear and safety apparel.(DND, Helly Hansen, Canada Goose, and Tilley are a few companies I created products for. Through out my six years working for the garment manufacture, I received incredible amount of training from the most talented seamstresses.
