Most of my paintings begin as vague ideas, a flash of color and shape in my mind that drives me to the canvas. Many begin from a place of deep emotion. Working with textures, bold colors and fluid lines helps me honor and work through emotions in a tangible way. While I am painting, as has been reported by artists in almost every medium throughout history, I often have a strong sense that the creation is happening through me. That I am an instrument, a conduit, through which the art makes it into the physical world. Often the finished piece bears little resemblance to my initial vision. I show up at the canvas with honest emotion and openness and am surprised by the image born into shape before me.
Why "Kidd"? Please note that my early works are signed with the name "Kidd". This is a nickname that represents my creative self and that helped me form my artist identity as a new painter.
