I am from the Mi'kmaq First Nation, born in Halifax, Nova Scotia who mostly paint in watercolours in high-realism technique. I am very fond of painting landscapes because in my early age my father took me out into the woods teaching hunting, fishing and set up trap lines. In the meantime while I was learning, I also appreciated the sound of birds and wildlife. I crossed many brooks and rivers and had my share of getting soaked. I now paint the very same brooks and received Canada's highest honour in the visual arts, THE GOVERNOR GENERAL MEDAL OF CANADA FOR THE VISUAL ARTS 1993 in honour for my endeavours painting rivers. A few years later I was a winner in the national wildlife art competition sponsored by Ducks Unlimited 1998. I have the best of two worlds: realist artist and painting subjects from my own cultural Mi'kmaq Legends.
I am working on my future one-man art exhibition THIS IS WHO I AM at Art Gallery Nova Scotia in Halifax, Nova Scotia, and will reopen at the National Art Gallery, Ottawa, Ontario.
Also, I am an intaglio printmaker who received my training in the BFA Program at Nova Scotia College of Art and Design. I have my own printmaking studio at my home and love to depict my incredible Mi'kmaq Legends that contain whimsical characters: giants, shapeshifters, dragons, elves and much more. Drawings from my upcoming art book will be posted frequently.for sale.
