Christopher Langley: Biography
Christopher Langley pushes the boundaries between the most sophisticated formalism and outsider art’s instinctive logic, making abstract painting look enviably effortless such as ‘Outback Sunrise’ and ‘Boats in the Bay’. Some of his canvases reflect a zany approach to experimentation and a methodological mode of play, conceiving painting as something intrinsically haptic that resolves from an intimately hands-on negotiation of mixed media styles. This approach can be seen in works such as ‘Study in Yellow and Black’ and ‘Angry Clown’, which some may find unnerving.
The traditional, digital, or a collage of both gives well-known scenes a unique look onto the canvas. ‘Way to St. Pauls’, and ‘Castell Coch’ are examples of these. In ‘Quiet Waves’ ‘The Gardener’, ‘Venus and Mercury Rising’ the painting’s texture is derived from multi-layered acrylic.
Langley launched his art career in 2012. Since then his works have sold in New York, London, Manchester, Wiltshire, Leicester, Glamorgan and Cardiff; the Agora Gallery has recently approached him for representation in the US. Originally from Pontypridd, Christopher had his first successful critically acclaimed solo art exhibition at the Pontypridd Arts and Cultural Museum in May 2012.
A National Solo exhibition at the Welsh Assembly Building, Cardiff, followed titled ‘Abstract Wales’ during May 2013, sponsored by Julie Morgan, AM. Langley’s third solo exhibition was at one of Cardiff’s premier establishments in August 2013 - The Waterloo Gardens Teahouse. His fourth solo exhibition is at The Gate Arts Centre throughout December 2013 at The Gate Gallery, Cardiff.
His work has been displayed at: The Pullman Gallery, New York, The Lumen Gallery, The Gate Art Gallery, Cardiff, The Library Gallery, London, Coffee Circus, London, Artgallery.co.uk (Featured Artist) and Artfinder.com.
