Sydney artist Lachie Hinton immerses himself in the diverse world around him, from which he illustrates contemporary life. Through acute observation of the physical, his unique interpretation of experience reveals warped recreations that offer insights into polarising conditions of life and the fundamentals of human nature.
In travelling to places to encounter the challenging, provocative, bizarre or extreme, Hinton places emphasis on leaving his comfort zone in order to understand more about himself and his subjects. With sentiments of honesty and irony, he often explores themes of popular and social culture, social issues, identity and sexuality through the study of different societies and cultural values.
Hinton began drawing from as early as he can remember where his expression of figuration came naturally. Maintaining a consistent drawing style that conveys rawness in form, he works with a mixed media of ink, graphite, charcoal and oil. Seeking to communicate ideas and stories through his subjects, it is these motivations that lead him abroad to observe and document contrasting life and culture.
