Artist Kristin Kovach Lorson’s comic illustrations have appeared in local newspapers each week for over 30 consecutive years. Her art appears along side her husband, John Lorson’s humor column, which appears as a Weekly staple(Previously in The Wooster Daily Record) in The Bargain Hunter. Far beyond her cartoon work, Kristin is an accomplished commissioned artist and designer working in an array of media. From designing and creating the vehicle wrap for the Wayne County Public Library Bookmobile, to creating corporate logos and trade show booths, to custom greeting cards and historical murals, Kristin’s art can be found in business places and public spaces all over Ohio. Her Personality Portraits—vignette collages of the life and times of her subjects—hang on walls across the U.S. and on five separate continents. She just recently illustrated her first children’s book, by author, Jessie Pachan, titled, ‘Why do mommy and daddy work?”. Which retails on Amazon.com. She began teaching acrylic classes a little over six years ago and absolutely loves sharing her love for painting with others. She conducts a painting class one Thursday evening a month and an occasional kids art class, too.
In 2018 she created the exterior of the Buckeye Agricultural Museum in Wooster, Ohio. Also, recently adding two large murals inside the museum too. This project took her many weeks of researching Ohio farming history and how agriculture evolved over time. This research requires a lot of reading and gathering of photos and information to establish a timeline, before she began to pull together a ‘theme’ for the paintings. “I kept coming back to the beautiful vintage advertisements of long ago. The sepia/hand-painted postcards, to the black and white ads of the 30s. I just loved how much detail went into creating an ad for a farm tool.” Kristin added, regarding her inspiration for the three larger panels that are now hanging on the front of the museum. “I wanted the art to illustrate the changing times with color and style as they did back then.”
A native of Akron and graduate of The University of Akron, Kristin’s art career was built around the work-at-home life of a mother of three children from her dining room studio in Orrville, a workspace she still shares with her college sweetheart and husband of 33 years. A book featuring a number of her early cartoons, “Send Help: Delights, Dilemmas and Delusions of a Modern Midwestern Man” was published in 1999, and has recently enjoyed a rebirth as a new generation of readers discovers the joy of laughing their way through everyday life.
