Hello, my name is Kayne J.W Mew.
I am twenty eight years old, born Sept. 20 1988. At Stevenson Memorial Hospital in Alliston Ontario.
I currently live along the shores of lake Simcoe in the township of Oro Medonte.
I am a mixed media artist of mixed ancestry. My main form of creative expression is carving/sculpture.
I have created various pieces out of wood, soapstone and bone/antler. Often using these mediums together in a single piece, along with copper, brass, other types of stones, shells and oil or acrylic paint. I am self taught, and use only the simplest of tools to create my works. (Hand tools, straight knives, simple spoon gouges, firming chisels.)
I try to find understanding using art to explore the many branches of my family tree. Tracing the designs, preserved through time, I feel more connected to the long line of people that has ultimately led here now to me.
I have been actively carving for fifteen years. I started by carving canes and walking sticks using Celtic inspired designs, as well as small animals and a few custom signs. In my early twenties I was starting to explore more into my First Nations roots and the multitude of art forms and styles. This led to the commission of an Iroqua False Face Mask/Doorkeeper in 2010, by an honorary Hiada elder and Mask carver. This elder suggested that I persue my interest in Mask Culture. Not only through the creative process carving these pieces, but also into the history and mystery that imbues these pieces. This journey has given me many gifts and teachings and continues to teach me that Masks aren't made to hide behind.
Since that first Doorkeeper I have carved over twenty Masks. I am proud to have a few pieces in private collections and have displayed in the various stores and galleries listed:
