L0w vision artist from Portland, OR Creating dynamic paper collage art and art products that appeal to the mind, body and soul.
Images flash in Lavaun’s mind, guiding her to create art – letting the feel of the shape and curves in the paper she cuts lead her. “I see myself as a storyteller, creating not through words but through images.” With limited vision, Lavaun relies on her intuition to bring her stories, or what she calls ‘waking dreams’ in the art world to life. “These visions direct the art,” she said.
Lavaun loves the tactile nature of working with paper. Her colorful creations are a new version of her family tradition, and in her own way she’s following in the footsteps of her great uncle – a Navajo rock painter. “Having a disability, being part of a multi-ethnic family, these are my real life experiences,” Lavaun said. She finds herself drawn to bringing the often-invisible stories in the art world to life. “I see people with these stories every day, and I want to just make this part of what I share.”
