Drawing, is, in my opinion, the beginning of all creative and communicative processes. It is not limited to medium, style or subject matter but rather is a reflection on the limitations of the human mind. I draw what I feel, what I see and what I understand of the world around me. My artistic focus and interests are particularly directed at illustration as a form of communication and creative thought. Also, it’s an important means of catharsis.
About me, Gina de Oliveira
I was born in Johannesburg in 1982 and I’m back here currently, living and working. After finishing school in 2000, I travelled for three years, living and working in Germany, Scotland and England. I worked as a hotel maid, a bar lady and an au pair (to name just a few jobs!) I returned to Jo’burg in 2004 and started a BA degree in Fine Arts. I finished my Honours degree in 2007, specialising in mixed media painting. After working briefly as a commercial artist, I was bitten by the travel bug again and packed my bags for Spain. There I had my first experience in teaching English as a foreign language. I did this for a year then, once again, returned home to continue my studies. I completed my Masters degree in 2013. I kept up my English teaching parallel to my art studies, improving my qualifications by doing a TESOL in between everything else. I received a studio bursary and also partnered with the Wits Art Gallery where I ran the monthly ‘Drop-in Drawing’ classes. I love teaching, both art and English; it’s hugely rewarding watching people develop and grow.
At the moment I divide my time between drawing, teaching and renovating our home.
