when i was young i was encouraged to paint by my father and grandmother, my great grand father was a painter and i still have some of his water colours, I painted up till about 15 years old and then did an apprenticeship in french polishing .I found French polishing utilized some of my painting skills in graining and colour matching .I never really did any more art painting until my mid 50s but i did a lot of other forms of art including wood carving, wood turning, pottery- ceramics
.I am a keen sailor and have owned a boat most of my life, and sailed as crew on many friends boats including classic yachts and this is a theme that comes through a lot of my paintings. I am also keen on history especially the history of sail and sailing ships which is something i like to paint a lot.
As a sailor i do a lot of sailing and take a lot of photos of New Zealand scenery. which is the basis of most of my art. I like to paint the things that make New Zealand unique and i like to try to capture some of the magic in those scenes ,in the unique light at a particular time of day or an interesting cloud formation, the many moods of the ocean.to try to bring a sense of the beauty that i see.
