Once upon a time there was a kid who loved to doodle. She would always have a pen or pencil with her and make funny pictures and makeovers on people in the TV guides or newspapers. She felt “taken away” with her creations. She won the 6th grade carnival poster contest and had her picture in the local paper. Her dad had her draw an ad for a customer and he sold it.
Early beginnings were there for me. I believe if you have the desire to create you can learn paint or draw or whatever but you have to want to do it and I WANTED to do it and still want to do it.
TEACHING: I have taught wine glass painting classes, volunteered to do a mural project at an elementary school and other projects with kids.
EDUCATION: Majoring in art at St. Cloud State University and then designing ads on the early beginnings of the MacPlus. In 2000 I started painting (self-taught) with acrylics and have continued thru today. I like acrylics because I didn't have the patience for oils. Still like acrylics and doodling in my art journals.
WORK HISTORY: I started the production department of a telephone directory company and worked at designing yellow page ads to become Vice President in charge of the department. Remember telephone directories?
WHO INSPIRES ME: Some of my influences have been Van Gogh (loved touring his museum in Amsterdam), Jackson Pollack and Peter Max. So many more but I did get to meet Peter Max and ask him questions. He answered one of my questions like I would have, “What is your favorite painting, Mr. Max?”. Without hesitation he said, “The one I am working on.”
I feel blessed to be given this talent and try to continue to learn and try new things.
WHY ABSTRACT?: The reason I am focusing on abstract art as of late is that I feel more freedom with them. It's like a puzzle to me. I add and subtract on my paintings frequently. When doing more realistic paintings, my perfectionist comes out and frustration can set in quickly but when I finish I am happy with it. I am also revisiting
the music of my youth such as the Beatles, Tom Petty, Eric Clapton, Bob Dylan and more to come.
Music and art definitely go together.
EXHIBITIONS: Shows such as One-of-a-Kind Chicago Art Show, Chicago & Minneapolis Gift Marts, Atlanta Home Decor, Twin Cities Food and Wine Experience and New York’s L!censing shows. I also license my designs and have illustrated 2 children's books titled, "Thank You for your Service." about the branches of our armed forces and "Kindness Travels - Penny Power" about traveling kindness to each other. My hope is when people see my paintings or books they will say, "Fun, Colorful, Interesting." And of course, I must buy one.
