This piece was an absolute challenge for me, as it was my first time painting northern hemisphere light and colours. Very different from Australia.

I have since visited the States many times, and other European countries, and understand the difference in how light plays in the two hemispheres. Each having their own fascinating aspects, and beauty.

Maree Jolleau's work is based many times on those captured moments of life, that we remember, but can't necessarily recall to mind visually. These works aim to provoke those memories and bring your memories before your eyes.

Maree is also fascinated by the light around us, and how it plays a large part of our visual world. Working from dark to light in her work, challenging herself with each piece to capture the right light for each particular subject.

If you switch off the light – there is nothing. Light creates our world.
