Now we are asked for an artist statement or, rather, an artistic statement. Do we need one? One should look to the work, not the artist. I have neither rules nor methods. And so am unburdened by the anxiety of influence. I paint not because I enjoy it, but because I occasionally feel compelled to do so. Some of the results of this compulsion are framed. Some are not. I cannot say why this is so. Nor do I feel that I should explain. About myself. Or the work. Art Brut. Outsider Art. Visionary Art. Raw Art. Naive Art. Primitive Art. All labels which have been applied to the paintings. All of which I feel are accurate. About some of what I do. Underlying it all, I suppose, is the desire, through a few suggestive touches in each work, to thrust the viewer into an unknown realm where the absurd courts the vulgar and the surreal walks hand in hand with the sublime.
