My work is a statement of contemplation and interpretation of the events around me through abstract and expressionist means. Through abstraction I find the truth of the subject, twisting, distorting, exaggerating, adding, omitting, and deconstructing each element in the viewable plane as a means to tell a deeper whole of the fractured pieces. With expressionism comes the means in which I twist and distort the composition to create a unified whole from the malformed parts of abstraction. I have turned heavily to the work of Cubist and Impressionist masters, but also to modern artists like Julie Mehretu whose abstract compositions, with strong linear flow mixed with organic expressions create a visual plane, unlike few others. Others like Eileen DeKooning serve as critical and poignant innovators of abstract expressionism to draw inspiration from but also a profoundly personal bond to her through my mentor and professor Stan Sporny. Through these influences and others, I aspire to begin to create work with strong abstract tones that reference and confront our modern day challenges, while ever mindful of the need to be a voice of true civil change for the betterment of all.
