I am selling privately this Beautiful painting of well known Moulin Rouge on a rainy night. Created by Ludolf Liberts. Many years ago, I helped an old Lady, moving some heavy furniture. She was an interesting lady with little money, and a lot of art, in a big old apartment. She told me that she had lived in Paris, among the artists right before the war. She want to thank me for helping her, but with little money, she gave this nearly forgotten painting, stored in a cupboard.
She told me that Liberts was a veteran from WW1, and used to travel around in the big cities to paint beautiful and colorful places. He sat outside, often in the rain, working to catch the atmosphere and the lights of Paris. She told me this 40 years ago, with a little smile. I have had this painting since then. And in the later years, I have discovered, that the artist really catch the atmosphere of Paris just before WW2.
The painting is a little rugged, and need cleaning, after all these years. But the city paintings are central in Liberts work. Liberts moved to USA in the late thirties and lived there, until he died in 1959.
