Erstwhile mathematician Eugene Norris’s passion is digitally enhanced photography done in a painterly style. His works tend to be non-representational, abstract, and/or minimalist although there is a strong figurative strain in photos of nature, wildlife and places. His images begin life inside a digital camera but are extensively processed through photo software and are therefore are no longer simply photos but are digital fine art images.

The digital age allows the easy crossing of boundaries between photography and other arts, and there need no longer be a separate esthetic for those who consider fine art photography as a valid art category. As an example, a photo image, like a painting, may have a tan or brown tonality. Judging this as a photo, it would be pronounced underexposed; yet the artist may deliberately have chosen to emphasize this look for his own reasons. Photographs are often judged by a technical esthetic peculiar to photography, and not as other works of art are. I continue to struggle with the formulation of a new esthetic for his work.

He has shown in numerous group shows with The Exhibiting Society of Artists, Pinellas Park Art Society, The Largo Public Library, SunTan Art, The Photographic Arts Society, and The Academy of Senior Professionals at Eckerd College. He has also had one-man shows as Artist of the Month at Sun Tan Art, Eckerd College, and Opera Central in St Petersburg.
