Sarah Willard Gray PhD.
I am a professional painter whose practice-based studio research builds on scholarly research undertaken at Wollongong University, N.S.W., from 2003 to 2014 and I specialise in Still Life and Landscape painting in both contemporary and abstract modes. As a visual artist with an established reputation I have had many solo and group exhibitions over the past twenty-five years. My career revolves around traditional landscapes and interior still life. These paintings are from the essence of being and are very much involved with form and colour and I will continue with this genre as well as my mapping technique.
My latest paintings are from a mapping viewpoint as I 'map' a local cultural landscape closely connected to the First Settlement of Australia in my own area: the Southern Highlands of New South Wales. The colours I use are of this beautiful Australian landscape.
It came as a sudden surprise to me to discover, during my research for my PhD, that my great-great-uncle was born (1830) at Bong Bong, the first village on the Southern Highlands of New South Wales, Australia.
His father brought the family to Australia after serving in two campaigns of the Battle of Waterloo. The English government in this newly acquired country awarded him 80 acres of land at Bong Bong which still exists as a farm which is very close to where I live now.
