I dedicate my art work to all the wounded souls like me.
I’m introverted by nature but painting brings out a part of me that connects with people’s soul. It’s been said that my paintings have healing qualities. I’ve been painting since I can remember. My earliest recollection with an “art critic” was in Pre-k. The teacher had given the assignment to create a painting of our mother. I painted my mom with a round face and added many pieces of curly hair that took up most of the pink paper drawn with aniline ink. My teacher’s reaction to my art was “that does not look like your mom at all.” When I got home I told my mother what had happened. She asked to see the picture that I created and deemed it “Beautiful.” She rewarded me by saying that I did not have to go back to school that year. So I did not and instead learned a powerful lesson… that art like beauty, is in the eye of the beholder.
My mother is a true artist and she was my first inspiration. She could draw anything with so much grace and beauty. This gift was present in anything she did from cutting vegetables in the most perfect way, to her day job as a school teacher or as the town’s wedding decorator. In the small village of Coronel Bogado, Paraguay where I grew up my mother’s talent was present everywhere. I am a mere shadow of the giant which represents my mother.
Many years went by before I painted again. I had the honor of studying under Don Hubert, Patsy Pennington, Douglas Walton, and Don Andrews. They are all fantastic artists that inspired me to continue my passion of creating watercolors based on the beauty of nature. Most of my pieces have a part of nature in them. Whether it be a butterfly, an apple, or a crab. I was a top earning real estate agent for many years until breast cancer came to visit me. The second time, stage 4, was the wakeup call. I got the message loud and clear “Do what you love Lys”. I owe a debt of gratitude to an entire village, so thank you kindly. Enjoy the work that is inspired by spirits that want to heal the soul.
