I am an accidental painter. I stumbled onto this path to fill my “empty nest”, not expecting it to change my life and outlook on life as it has done.
As a second-generation Singaporean, my immersion in our diverse, multi-cultural and modern environment developed in me a natural affinity and admiration for beauty, cultures, practices and celebrations. I channel this into my paintings to convey a balance of ethnic touch with modern feel.
Acrylic is my favourite medium, and I love to paint on large canvases. I paint anything that arrests my free-spirited soul, as well as themes that express the very beliefs that shaped me: spirituality, feminism, love and hope.
My ‘Musical Ganesha’ Series was inspired by my childhood adulation for the Hindu God, and they remain my favourite works to date. I’m also drawn to other elements of spirituality, such as temple ruins, temple bells and antique doors. My 'Celebrating Women' Series is very close to my heart. It is my way of representing the countless women who continue to rise against oppression of many sorts.
When I travel, I always include a trek or two because I love to paint my travels; I am currently working on a new series, 'Nature and its Elements'.
As a self-taught artist, I have no rules to observe. I explore paint strokes and play with the colours that call to me. I revel in the freedom I feel when creating and often leverage my moods and experiences. I am truly enjoying the journey.
Painting is my medication. I relate to painting as some people might relate to meditation, my focus is intense and undivided. Travelling keeps me enriched. Painting keeps me sane! It is a path I am destined to travel.
