The Elephant Rocks BLM area near Del Norte, Colorado, were formed after the Summer Coon Volcano (among others) erupted in the La Garita area millions of years ago. The rocks geology is comprised of "Fish Canyon Tuff" a term regarding the volcanic ash that settled for miles around the eruption area. Softer than granite for instance, these rocks have been shaped over millennia by wind and rain, forming elephant like shaped, very large rocks.
