Wheel thrown and altered vase with the face sculpted into the wall of the pot. cone 5 stoneware. I like to sculpt the face into the walls of the pot while it is still soft and plastic. I enjoy the challenge of working almost exclusively with the clay that is there and creating the face by pushing from the outside or inside. I try to make a pot that is appealing on its own and transition into the face. This allows me to have the pottery forms and face shape play off of each other. The anthropomorphic nature of pottery has interested me for a long time. We call the various parts of pottery the foot, neck, shoulders, belly, waist etc. I just take that thought a bit further and have fun with it.
