The portrait of an old man in Acrylic on paint-board. Getting old under the African sun can be cruel. Poverty dictates that the elderly go on government pension of less than a dollar a day, yet propriety demands that on Pension day, everyone is suited and tied for the occasion of receiving this pittance. The pride of the poor in South Africa is appearance. No one will guess that they walk from a tin shack to attend official business. The painting is inspired by my time as a Social Worker in Magaliesburg (a small rural village outside Johannesburg).
