My work focuses on heavy, rough brushwork and vivid colors to create a high aesthetic of both painting and subject. The paintings have images of relics such as statues, ruins, antiquated architecture, and fountains draped against a background of an imagined landscape to reinforce the concept of history becoming forgotten. The landscapes are mostly imagined, although initially based on a reference. I create scenes which can express intimate and isolated moments, offering an escape for the viewer from the mundane and stressful way of contemporary life. I like to think of my paintings as a form of "abstract impressionism". The paintings contain naturalistic applications of color and light but also have flat abstracted shapes, forms, and colors. Ultimately, the nature of the erratic application of brushwork creates a hazy illusory atmosphere which embraces complex compositional shapes and forms.
