India is home to one of the largest tribal population in the world which as per the 2011 census was more than 104 million people. There are a total of 645 officially recognized tribes in the country. However, the living conditions of the tribal people in India are the most pitiable. Their livelihoods have always been at the receiving end government's development policies, especially since the launch of the neo-liberal economic policies. This has led to an organized resistance by the tribal people in different parts of the country, particularly in the tribal dominated central Indian state of Chhattisgarh. The erstwhile Central government led by the Congress party launched 'Operation Green Hunt' against the tribal guerrillas in the state fighting under the leadership of Left revolutionaries. This is the portrait of one of the tribal guerrillas.
