Ritwick Ghatak is among the finest directors that Indian cinema has produced till date. A contemporary of the legendary Satyajeet Ray, Ghatak had a rather painful life for various reasons. He started as a cultural activist and full time worker of the then united 'Communist Party of India.' It is sad that his works gained greater acclaim after his death than when he was living; even worse, his cinema was rediscovered first in the west before interest revived in it within India.

This sketch was made from a tiny newspaper photograph of Ghatak that I happened to see at a friend's place. The face kept haunting me for a long time until finally I made this sketch one day.
