Sweetbriar Hall in Nantwich , Cheshire , [ UK ] is one of only three buildings to survive the great fire of Nantwich which destroyed the market town in 1583 .The fire was started by a chap brewing his own ale. In those times homes were largely constructed of " wattle and daub "with thatch rooves ,almost fuel for a fire which spread quickly and destroyed 150 properties and raged for 20 days .The other two properties which survived were Churches Mansion and St. Marys Church
