Built in 1787 and in operation until 1896, the old Jamestown windmill still stands today in excellent condition at the top of Windmill Hill in the center of the island. It is a three-story octagonal structure with a domed cap or bonnet. The bonnet holds the sails and can turn a full 360 degrees to capture the wind. Believe it or not this is the original structure, it has been kept up beautifully for well over two centuries. It wasn't open when I visited the windmill but I could easily photograph it from the side of the road. The daffodils were in bloom (other view) and the skies were a perfect blue with budding trees all around along with a carpet of bright green grass at its foot.
