Marianna Verevkina (Mariamna von Werefkin, September 10, 1860, Tula - February 6, 1938, Ascona, Switzerland) - Russian expressionist artist.

Born in Tula, in a family of hereditary nobles. Moves to St. Petersburg. The young artist gets acquainted with Ilya Repin and becomes his student.

The accident in 1888 on the hunt nearly deprived Marianne of the opportunity to draw: the girl shot herself in her right hand and for several years learned to handle the brush, holding it between the middle and ring fingers.

With the outbreak of World War I, Marianne moved from warring Germany to Switzerland. In her diary, Verevkina wrote: “Ascona taught me to respect everything human, to love the happiness of creation and the poverty of being, to carry it all in myself as a great spiritual wealth.”

Marianne Verevkina died on February 6, 1938. The whole of Ascona came out to see the artist on her last journey. In 2002, one of the streets of Munich was named in her honor.
