This is a mixed media piece, painted onto a rough hessian canvas which provides a depth of texture and a rustic edge, in contrast to the brilliant splendour if the bird.
This vibrant work was inspired by the chickens kept by one of our neighbours. When my son was small he would insist we walked to see them almost daily. Cockerels are so proud and have such a presence. I wanted to capture not only the stunning plumage in all its glory but also the air of magnificence that these animals radiate, in their prime. The range of colours, the depth and the iridescence is extraordinary, if only we take a moment to observe!
