Tongeren (French: Tongres) the place where I was born, is a city and municipality in the south of the Belgian province of Limburg. The city is the capital of an administrative district and seat of a division of the judicial district of Limburg. Tongeren is located on the Jeker River in the Haspengouw region.
As of 2019, the municipality has about 31,000 inhabitants in an area of 87.56 km², making it the ninth largest municipality in Limburg by population and the 77th largest in Belgium.
From 15 BC, Tongeren developed as a Gallo-Roman civilian settlement. In the following centuries, the city played an important role in the history of the Low Countries. Thus, Tongeren obtained market rights in the 2nd century and in the 4th century the city became the seat of the first bishopric of the Low Countries.
