This is a young horse rearing to the left. He is light on his feet. The air is foggy and rooftops show in the background. I used a combination of paint sticks and oil paint from the tube. I wanted the figure to be defined, but not rigid. I left some of my early gestural marks in the painting, giving it a partly unfinished, sketchy appearance. I practiced drawing from about 8 years old until my early 20's before I was satisfied with my mastery of it and then proceeded to learn painting. I never draw the idea first on the canvas; I just begin with paint. I do a lot of pen-and-ink drawings of my ideas that I may later use in a painting. I also write ideas down and draw some of my dreams for possible later use as a painting.
