Reverend Pedro Pietri was a Puerto Rican poet who was a co-founder of the Nuyorican Poets Cafe and one of the main voices in the Nuyorican Poetry style. He was also a social advocate, working for equality and promoting safe sex practices. While his poetry included biting social commentary on the blight of Puerto Ricans living in urban blight, it also always had a sarcastic sense of humor to it as well. He would at times perform his poetry with placards upon which he would espouse his views on safe sex, mockingly imitating the actions of Pentecostal Puerto Ricans. He was also known to carry a black cross, upon which were nailed condoms. In this portrait I portray Reverend Pedro Pietri as a religious painter might portray a saint.
