I saw these children playing when I visited a state park in Florida recently called Stephen Foster Folk Culture Center State Park. It is in north Florida. The children were playing and climbing on the limbs of an old Southern Live Oak tree and I knew right away that I wanted to paint it. The Southern Live Oak is an elusive tree to attempt to capture in a painting or a photograph. In that regard it is like the Grand Canyon or Niagara Falls. But, to include the tree, which is easily over 100 years old, with young children, who are probably not even 10 years old, while they are playing seemed visually poetic. The dappled light created by the shadows of the limbs, the leaves, and the Spanish Moss added to the charm of the moment. I painted this digitally using Procreate with a dry brush and a turpentine brush.
