Toucans are those species of birds belonging to the Order Piciforme, Family Ramphastida, composed of about 30 species found mainly in Brazil, Mexico and Argentina. This avian order is characterized by having zygomatic feet (in which the 2nd and 3rd phalanx are facing forward and the 1st and 4th phalanx are facing backwards) and bipartite uropygial gland (secretes the oil used to waterproof the feathers). In addition to these characteristics, the rhamphasids also have the absence of ingluvium (crop) and the presence of a pneumatic horny beak that is very light and resistant. The beak also participates in the dispersion of heat, as it is highly vascularized. They are birds without migratory habits, arboreal, that live in flocks and feed mainly on fruits, complementing their diet with some insects and small prey.
