This painting of Neptune & the Fountain of the Ocean was painted in the Boboli Gardens, Florence. The fountain rests on the Isolotto, a small island which was once a private place in the gardens.

The Boboli gardens appears in several stories the most famous recent story is Dan Browns Inferno, a part of the Davinci Code series. You couldn't have a conspiracy theory story involving Leonardo Da Vinci which doesn't involve Florence but I had no idea about the book until several people, who were on Davinci Code pilgrimages, of sorts, stopped to speak with me as I painted. The fountain represents the oceans and was originally sculpted in 1576

I remember painting this very clearly because it was windy and I was with another artist making studies and occasionally completed paintings, in locations around Florence. It's always very inspiring to paint with other artists.
