Original Oil Painting, 6" x 8". This was the morning scene at Dean Creek when I set up my easel to paint plein air. The Roosevelt elk were cooperative, and this bull and his herd were near the viewing area. The rut is just beginning, and there is a herd of bachelor elk in the distance off to the right. This bull can be seen here bugling a warning to the younger bulls to stay away from his cows. This was a challenging painting as the viewing area was very busy with curious onlookers and the elk refused to stay in one place. 6" x 8" is quite small, so the the elk are less than ½" big which proved to be both challenging and fun to paint.
