A membranophone is an instrument that produces sound by the vibration of a membrane, usually a tense animal hide. The vibration occurs when the player strikes or brushes the membrane, either with hands or with a stick. A drum is an example of a membranophone, and cultures from all over the world have created different types of drums. They have been used for communication, healing, accompanying a dance, and as a signal of war, among other reasons. They are still used in many cultures and in many types of music today.

The Ocean Drum is a membranophone whose vibrations are created by the movement of the brass beads over the membrane. The gourd is the resonator and amplifies the sound of the surf. The Ocean Drum represents a love of natural sound and our attempts to capture the uncapturable – as if we could hold the sea in our hands.
This drum is approx. 14" in diameter with a goat skin drumhead. Drums can be personalized to fit the interests of the user.
