Thunder drums trace their roots to American Indian music in which they were used with other drums, rain sticks and flutes to recreate the sound and motion of a sudden storm.
Thunder drums "thunder" when vibrations in the spring are transmitted through a drumhead and amplified in a gourd. The vibrating spring causes the drumhead to vibrate, which in turn causes the air inside the drum to vibrate. The air in the drum begins to resonate, and the volume of the sound increases.
Even a small vibration in the spring can grow into a large thundering sound. The larger drumhead creates a louder sound in the drum.
