We saw this scene on the Caribbean island of Nevis. Depicting the watchful stillness of the pelican, here he has spotted a fish, and just ...waits. Then, like a dart, the white, silver and blue-grey colours of his plumage blending into the ocean, he swoops down. I was mesmerised by his patience and his grace; even more so when I learnt that the pelican is the Caribbean national symbol, and represents not only preparation and constancy, but also a digging deep into emotional depths to bring understanding to the surface of our awareness.
